Oscar-winning make-up artist Rick Baker announced his retirement Wednesday (May 27).

In a radio interview with KPCC, Baker said, “I said the time is right, I am 64 years old, and the business is crazy right now. I like to do things right, and they wanted cheap and fast. That is not what I want to do, so I just decided it is basically time to get out.”

Over Baker’s 40-year career, he has been nominated for the Oscar 12 times, winning 7 for An American Werewolf in London, Harry and the Hendersons, Ed Wood, The Nutty Professor, Men in Black, How the Grinch Stole Christmas and The Wolfman. Baker criticized the industry’s current fascination with digital make-up effects in films like Maleficent, on which he worked. “I could have done it in a garage basically,” he stated.

Baker said he would consider consulting on a project in the future, but he’ll no longer have a full studio.
