What a difference a leg makes. On the penultimate episode of The Amazing Race‘s 27th season, a series of unfortunate events could be the downfall of a Golden Team. In this case, the team wasn’t golden, but Green. Justin & Diana, winners of seven first place finishes, found themselves struggling after leaving Agra, India for Hong Kong.
As the final four arrived in Hong Kong, they were to find special Rolls Royces to be taken to their first clue on this next to last leg of the race. The Reporters, Kelsey & Joey, and The Cheerleaders, Tiffany & Krista, had no trouble finding their cars, but Justin & Diana and Chris & Logan were lost. The Green Team left the airport in third place with The Paparazzi in perpetual last.
A Detour had three teams choosing a tailoring challenge, while The Green Team decided to choose a challenge that was like looking for a needle in a haystack: find a used cell phone that worked and had a special message leading them to the next clue.
At the tailoring challenge, The Cheerleaders had a bit of knowledge on how to cut material to a pattern – double over the fabric. They finished first, while the others took a bit longer to catch on. In the end, Chris & Logan were again the last team to finish. But, Justin & Diana finished their cell phone challenge quickly and only had to walk about a block to get their clue. Instead, they got into a cab with a driver who did not speak English and drove about 40 minutes out of their way. Pulling over at a hotel, Justin and Diana found someone who could help them and they realized the error of their ways. For the first time, the Green Team was in last place.
The teams were then instructed to take the Hong Kong ferry to Macau. Justin & Diana were at the mercy of their cab driver who had no idea where the ferry was (which is odd since it seems to be a pretty important travel hub). To compound matters, there are two ferries. Teams were instructed to take a specific ferry, but the directions Justin & Diana had were to the wrong ferry (which still went to the right place). But choosing the wrong ferry, and learning it was the first one of the day lifted Green’s spirits, will have consequences later.
On Macau, the teams had to participate in the world’s largest water show, jumping into a large pool of water and finding a golden fish tied to a line underwater, obscured by a wall of bubbles. Of the three teams that arrived first, last placers Chris & Logan managed to jump into first place when Logan found the fish first. Kelsey was second, but Krista could not find the fish before the music ended, meaning she would have to do it again. And this was a good 20 minute show which put them farther and farther behind.
While preparing to go on again, Green arrived but it took Diana too long to get into costume so she had to wait for the next show. Luckily, for her Krista failed again so on her third try she was joined by Diana, who managed to find the fish, putting them into third place.
Beyond all reason, the most disliked team on the race (by me, anyway), Chris & Logan, managed to leap into first place with the Reporters in their perpetual second place. At this point, the editors were having a field day inter-cutting between Justin & Diana and Tiffany & Krista, keeping us guessing who would get to the Pit Stop in third place. With Green ahead, the Cheerleaders finished the challenge and they were all depending on cab drivers to get them to the right place.
Justin & Diana arrived in third place, but Phil said those words no one wants to hear, “You are the third team to arrive.” It’s the phrasing that tells you you’re in trouble. If he’d said, “You are team number three,” it would have been the end. Instead, Phil informed Green that by taking the wrong ferry, they had incurred a thirty minute penalty. On top of that, the ferry they took was 25 minutes closer than the proscribed ferry so that was added to their time for a total of 55 minutes, giving the Cheerleaders a chance to catch up.
Except, thanks to their cab driver, the Tiffany & Krista arrived just minutes after the penalty time expired, putting Justin & Diana back in the game and sending the Cheerleaders home. It’s safe to say that neither the Paparazzi nor the Reporters were happy about the turn of events. Surprisingly, there was no Non-elimination on this leg (there was only one this season, but a record three U-Turns), and there is only one leg, and one episode, left to determine the winner of The Amazing Race 27.
