TV by the Decade :: November 15•21

Discovery Channel

Under normal circumstances — and this year is anything but normal — the Fall TV season is well underway and the networks are not rolling out many, or any, new series, especially as the holidays approach. This week, only a single decade offered up three new series, all on cable, and not a single one lasted past one season. So check out this week’s premieres and see if you remember anything 2010 had to offer.

  • Synopsis: Set in 1986 in the state of Indiana, the series revolves around a group of friends entering their freshman year of college at Hayes University. The young men must deal with being on their own for the first time and preparing for what is to come in their college years.
  • Network: TBS
  • Broadcast History: One season, 10 episodes, last broadcast on January 18, 2011
  • Trivia: TBS originally ordered eight episodes for the first season, but bumped it to ten a week before the show premiered. The series was filmed at USC’s Mudd Hall of Philosophy, and the UCLA campus and the former Ambassador College campus in Pasadena, CA.

November 19 – Homemade Millionaire

  • Cast: Ed Evangelista, Wendy Robbins, Kelly Ripa
  • Synopsis: Reality television series featuring aspiring inventors and entrepreneurs drawn from public auditions. Each week, three entrepreneurs and their products are tested and advised by coaches Ed Evangelista or Wendy Robbins as they pitch their product to the executives of Home Shopping Network (HSN) in New York. One product each week is selected to be featured and sold on the network, which gains the inventors exposure, professional product guidance, and potential sales to over 90 million HSN customers.
  • Network: TLC
  • Broadcast History: One season, six episodes, last broadcast on December 24, 2010
  • Trivia: Items pitched include decorative hair ties, a hair care supplies cabinet, hair rollers, plates and glasses with pre-measured portions marked, edible liners for cupcakes, refillable disposable beverage pouches, shirts for full-busted women, a clutch purse to hold shoes, a wrap dress in various lengths, natural cleaning products, a blanket with a different thickness on each half, curtains with buttons/hooks/decorative clips.

November 21 – Brew Masters

  • Cast: Sam Calagione
  • Synopsis: The show focused on Sam Calagione, the founder and head of Dogfish Head Brewery in Milton, Delaware, and his staff as they searched the world for new, ancient, and imaginative inspirations for beers.
  • Network: Discovery Channel
  • Broadcast History: One season, 6 episodes (1 unaired), last broadcast on December 16, 2010
  • Trivia: The series was produced after someone at Discovery visited the Dogfish Head Brewery’s website and saw their videos. In 2011, Anthony Bourdain claimed the series was cancelled due to pressure from a large beer company that threatened to pull advertising, but it was confirmed low ratings were the real reason. The sixth episode was unaired because it was to feature the opening of Dogfish Head’s new brewpub Eataly, but delays in the opening resulted in the episode remaining incomplete. The episode never aired in the US, but did air in several other countries. The final episode was included in the Season 1 DVD release, but has not been made available to stream.
