Pennyworth :: The Beast Within

Epix

We’re back after Pennyworth took an unexpected break for the Labor Day holiday in the US. And boy howdy, did we get some juicy stuff this week. The episode had three main storylines but that last shot of the episode? My jaw is still on the floor!

Alfred is still reeling over Esme’s death and upset by not being able to track down the guy who he believes killed her, that officer he’d made a joke about ten years earlier. But he, Bazza and Dave Boy went back to the residence to see what they could find and they found what is pretty indisputable proof that Captain Curzon is his man: Esme’s engagement ring pinned to a military uniform jacket like a medal. The cleaning lady who comes in on Mondays and Thursdays is no help in determining where Curzon goes during the day, so Alfie decides to pay a visit to an officer’s club to put the word out that one of their own has committed a heinous crime. He’s almost tossed out on his ear, but a general offers to help and will give him any pertinent information … if he finds anything.

Alfred goes home and tries to clean Esme’s ring and his father offers some assistance with bicarbonate of soda. It’s another touching moment of bonding between the two as Mr. Pennyworth says that Esme would have made a wonderful daughter-in-law. Later at the pub, Alfred and his mates await the designated time to see if any news will come, and it does, with Alfred given the location – the Royal Almshouse – and a room number of where he can find Curzon. There, he’s very surprised to run into the very much alive Bet Sykes, whom learned the identity of Esme’s killer from Lord Harwood. Unfortunately, Curzon heard them in the hallway and bolted. After a chase and some gunfire, Curzon gets away by hopping on the side of a bus and Bet tells Alfred she would have had him had he not shown up. Are these two going to find themselves working together to mete out justice to Curzon?

As for Bet, she was initially left behind when Harwood and Peggy went to London so as not to be a liability considering she’s supposed to be dead. There, Harwood met with Frances Gaunt, who was thrilled to see he was still alive and apparently willing to return his title as head of the Raven Society back over to him. She is, however, not so certain Harwood’s plan for revenge against those who wronged him is a good idea considering the truce she and Mrs. Thwaite ironed out. But Harwood is certain once Thwaite gathers enough power on her side, that truce will not hold. Harwood will reveal that he’s still alive only to the higher ups in the organization and will reveal himself at the right moment to make a huge statement. Gaunt holds a meeting of the Ravens with some of the local member ship to deliver some news about something big that is coming and then … hold that thought.

Martha Kane finally makes her way home after waking up naked in a field, and finds a frantic Thomas Wayne waiting for her. Neither of them have any idea where Patricia is and Thomas thought Martha was dead because she’s been missing for … THREE DAYS. Now he’s blaming her for being irresponsible while she tries to piece together what happened before she blacked out, and all she can remember is coming face to face with the Devil himself at Aleister Crowley’s party. Dragging Thomas back to Crowley’s, Martha makes all kinds of threats about calling the police — with whom Crowley is very friendly — and Thomas assumes all Crowley wants in exchange for Patricia is money, or his company Wayne Enterprises. Crowley scoffs that he has more than enough money, and the only thing he wants … or rather the thing his Master wants … is Thomas Wayne’s soul.

Wayne says that he doesn’t deal with underlings and wants to meet Satan face to face. Crowley says that’s not usually the way it works but he’ll oblige, taking Wayne to another room, accompanied by … his boy-toy? … Jason Ripper. Jason wheels out a movie projector and begins rolling a film full of almost pornographic and horrific imagery including a Satanic ritual. Thomas orders Ripper to turn it off and when he doesn’t , Thomas jumps up, knocks the projector over and begins strangling Jason with the film, even trying to stuff handfuls of it down Jason’s throat. Crowley had told Wayne that he had a beast inside of him, and now Thmoas realizes that he has unleashed that beast, almost losing complete control of himself, inches away from killing Jason. Crowley appears and says to Thomas, ‘Now tell me you didn’t meet the Devil.’ That was enough for Crowley to order Patricia to leave with her brother.

Still shaken by the whole thing, Thomas refuses to tell Martha and Patricia what happened, insisting that none of them were ever at Crowley’s. Pushing Thomas again by asking is he saw him, the Devil, Thomas answers with a firm no. But Martha doesn’t seem to believe him.

Now back to that Raven Society meeting. While Gaunt was giving her speech about nationalism, riling up the troops as it were, bringing them to their feet with rapturous applause, we see one very familiar face in the crowd clapping enthusiastically — Mr. Pennyworth. If Alfred finds out, that is going to cause some serious tension in the Pennyworth household.
