Grey’s Anatomy :: Hotter Than Hell

ABC

Holy smokes it’s the return of Addison Forbes Montgomery!! And it is as hot and spicy as everyone has been dreaming of since that fateful day she left for L.A. some billion seasons ago. (Okay, like 14 seasons ago, but we’ve definitely seen her since.) And not only does she return — but she basically returns with her almost identical opening line from when we met her way back at the season finale of Season 1. ‘I’m Addison Shepherd and you must be the intern screwing my husband.’ Except she introduces herself as ‘Dr. Addison Montgomery and you must be the group that’s screwing up the program.’ BOOM. SMOLDER. WALK. AWAY.

But it gets better (as if it could get any better.) She and Meredith have this amazing elevator moment — it always happens in elevators! We’re having all the throwbacks this week! The surgical residents (who are all ga-ga-gossip over the Grey-Montgomery past and whether or not there was a three-some with Derek and whether or not Addi was on that plane …) Mer and Addi get on the elevator, laughing their asses off about the residents (with a nice toss from Mer — ‘We can hear you!’) and then out of nowhere, Addi breaks down crying. And Mer — you guessed it — hits the elevator stop. #ClassicGreys #AlwaysInTheElevator

Addi cannot cope with the loss of Derek. It’s this really beautiful, touching moment. And then Meredith, who has grown so, so much over these 18 seasons, invites Addi home — because Derek is in Seattle. He lives in his children, so she wants Addi to come home and meet the kids. There’s a big ice cream party at Mer’s, with Amelia and the kids, and it’s amazing how well they all get along. Station 19 formerly of Grey’s) ‘steals’ the mobile surgical rig … because Winston maybe stole a kidney (it’s never actually made clear how he got Rasheeda on the transplant list … though it’s heavily implied that he basically bent/broke the rules. But hey — Izzie once stole a heart for Denny so Winston can steal a kidney for Rasheeda, and at least he didn’t cut any dialysis ports …) and has now roped Hunt into performing the not-technically-illegal surgery. (Just nobody tell Bailey. For any reason.) That goes successfully, though again it’s fairly suspicious all around. The things we have to do to fix this broken system.

ABC

Meanwhile in overheated hell, Bailey (pre-episode) had apparently put Teddy (of all people) in charge of ‘boosting morale’, more specifically ‘in charge of fun.’ So she decides to make it ‘crazy hat day’ and is trying to foist these ludicrous hats on everyone (which would be hilarious if it wasn’t a billion degrees in Seattle.) She has a great bonding moment with Link, whose world is just failing and falling apart all around him because he can’t get Amelia to marry him. The two of them go up to the roof to try and ‘fix the HVAC’ (and basically just realize they’re in waaay over their heads) but she has this moment with him that just harkens back to the old days of ‘rando-doc-pairings’ comforting one another (like that one time Bailey and Derek had a bonding moment in the elevator.) #ClassicGreys

Schmidt gets the assist on Addi’s big surgery; Jo … gets treated like a proper resident from the way-back days. It was literally a Mark Sloan-style moment. Addi says, ‘Oh, you’re an OB resident?’ Jo responds with an over-enthusiastic ‘yes’ and Addi immediately dispatches her — for coffee. #ClassicGreys

All around everyone has these old school moments on this week’s episodes. It’s like we had to be reminded how good things were once upon a time. And they did that this week. Although Amelia had a new-school semi-flirtation with the doctor in MN — Dr. Kai Bartley. They walked Amelia through a ‘guided meditation to stay cool’ and it had that flirty feel to it. (You think Link blew his temper on the roof!? Just wait and watch him implode if Amelia goes down this road …)

It all culminated with a snow cone party. In the morgue. (And Bailey shooting down Teddy’s very pathetic pun of ‘people are dying to get in here.’) Hayes was still being flirt-friendly with Grey; Grey powers up and tells Webber she’s giving up the residency program (back to him, of course) and is splitting time between Grey-Sloan and MN, and everyone seems to be okay. For the moment. Wait —

Where’s Maggie!? Did she pull an Alex Karev?!? Guess we’ll have to wait and see!
