TV by the Decade :: July 24•30

Disney Channel

It’s the last full week of July and at this point it feels like the networks just gave up with people on vacation or taking advantage of the long days. No network is going to launch a pricey scripted series at this time of the year. 1952-1992 didn’t even bother with new shows, but by the 2000s there were cable channels that needed something to bring a few eyeballs to the TV so they could sell ads, and even the major networks had gone back to that tradition that seemed to die out in the 1980s — the Summer Replacement Series. Every new show that debuted this week is either news or reality. In 1992, VH1 told us about one-hit wonders, and 2012 had a family prank show, an NFL news show, a fishing show, and that aforementioned summer replacement reality series on CBS. Do you remember any of these shows? Let us know in the comments section below.
