Only two new series premiered during the first week of March, 40 years apart. One was a 13-week failure, while the other went on for multiple seasons with a groundbreaking Emmy Award win for its first season. The series also made an ‘overnight star’ of its lead, who had been around for a while but the series definitely took his career in a new direction. Do you remember either of this week’s series premieres?

Winner of the Golden Globe for Best Television Drama in 2002, the first basic cable series to do so. Star Michael Chiklis won both the Emmy and Golden Globe for his work in 2002. The show’s seven seasons cover approximately three years of time. The series was being developed at the time of the 9/11 attacks and the network worried that audiences would not want to see police officers in a negative light. The success of the film Training Day in October 2001 gave them the confidence to continue with the series. The series pilot and finale were directed by Clark Johnson, who had previously starred on Homicide: Life on the Street. Frank Darabont and David Mamet also directed an episode each. The character of Claudette was originally written as a man but CCH Pounder’s agent convinced creator Shawn Ryan that a woman in the detective role would offer a new slant. The character was changed, but not the dialogue. Chiklis and Jay Karnes are the only actors to appear in every episode.
