Resident Alien :: The Wire

Poor Max has learned the hard way that you don’t steal alien tech on this week’s episode of Resident Alien. As we saw at the end of the previous episode, little Max discovered he had a full chest of hair. Waking up the next morning, he now has a full beard as well and calls Sahar to help give him a shave without alarming his parents. Poor kid is a bloody mess by the end of it. Sahar believes the sudden shift into puberty is a result of Max going into space, but he knows it’s because of the metal ball under his bed, one of the orbs Harry created from his broken down ship. Why Max doesn’t admit this to her is puzzling since they share everything about Harry, but they both know only he can help Max and they need to track him down. Harry also knows that Max stole the orb and is delighting in the knowledge that it will have some effect on the boy.

Harry, however, has had a nightmare about everyone being killed — complete with a zombie D’Arcy telling him it’s too late to save Asta — and is consumed with constructing a bomb shelter under his cabin where he and Asta can hide out after his people come and kill everyone. His octopus friend, 49, doesn’t think this will work at all and reminds Harry that if he’d just gone home he wouldn’t have to worry about the people of Earth. Harry reminds 49 that he couldn’t take Max back to his planet because he’d never get him through customs so hiding out with his one human friend is the only option. Plus he no longer has a ship so that complicates things. 49 thinks Harry has become too human and that will be his downfall.

Mayor Ben is having his own issues in town as a neighboring town mayor has produced a TV commercial promoting his town’s vacation options … that don’t include murder. Someone has already defaced the brand new ‘Welcome to Patience’ sign by spray painting a dismembered foot on it, and one of the local residents is conducting a murder tour through the town. It also doesn’t help that the last doctor Ben hired has vanished, another was murdered, and Harry is the prime suspect, with Sheriff Mike and Deputy Liv hot on his trail. Their interest was piqued when they learned the real Harry had put his cabin up for sale and suddenly withdrew it from the market, paying off the $500,000 he owed almost overnight. Where did he suddenly get that kind of money?

Posing as a married couple with an insanely complicated backstory, courtesy of Mike, the pair paid a visit to the realtor who had listed the cabin to get more information and Liv hilariously took Mike’s backstory for herself after days of him constantly overlooking her skills. She really has produced more evidence in this case but the egotistical Mike just can’t let her have any credit. It was great to see her take that wind out of his sails. But now they really need to keep an eye on Harry, and follow him to the diner where he’s indulging in pie and oatmeal, what Mike calls the meal of a psychopath. Liv tries to read Harry’s lips as he talks first to Max and Sahar, getting what he said right but thinking she misread him. Harry agreed to help Max if they stood up in the booth and loudly proclaimed ‘I just farted.’ Max is game but Harry says Sahar has to do it because Max is too eager. Sahar refuses but Max yells it out anyway.

They leave and Asta arrives. She’d spent the day with D’Arcy, her best and oldest friend in town, and she realized that she’s Harry’s only friend in Patience. So she wants to try to push him out of his comfort zone and make new friends. Harry considers it but all he is really thinking about is bringing someone else into the shelter with them to cook and clean. Perhaps her father? No, because they are related and may turn on Harry. Asta invites Harry to the weekly poker game with Ben, Mike, D’Arcy and some others but Harry doesn’t find anyone else there to his liking, especially not Ben after he casually asked Harry how long you could choke someone during sex before they passed out. Pass.

But Harry is now ready to show Asta her new home. When she arrives and sees the shelter for herself she is shocked and appalled. She tells Harry that there is no way she’s going to stay in an underground bunker with him to come out maybe a year later to nothing. If all of her friends and family are going to die then she will die with them. And to prove her point, Asat takes Harry’s toaster and goes into the bathroom, filling the tub with water and standing in it while holding the plugged in toaster. Harry tries to call her bluff (now that he’s an ‘expert’ on ‘poker faces’) and tells her to go ahead and kill herself, he doesn’t care. Asta calls his bluff (even Harry admits to himself that he has a terrible poker face) and raises the toaster over her head and makes a motion to drop it in the water. Harry quickly pulls the plug, defeated, but he doesn’t know that she had actually turned off the outlet so she was never in any danger.

Shortly after that incident, Mike and Liv arrive to arrest Harry. They find Asta in the cabin but she tells them Harry isn’t there. They know he is because they saw him through the window eating pizza. Asta finally admits that he’s hiding in the basement, and when they go down guns drawn, they find … a very surprised Asta. Upstairs, Asta changes back into Harry (he used one of the orbs to alter his appearance), with a very scary look of determination on his face. Are his three visitors now in grave danger? Tune in next week to find out.
