It’s the penultimate episode of the first season — yes, the delightful new series has been renewed for a second — and after all Harry has been through he’s still focused on his mission to wipe out the human population of Earth.
Even after Asta stays with him through the night after his leg amputation, Harry’s not the least bit grateful to her. But as she discovers his leg regenerating — Harry’s species is, after all, related to our octopuses (grammatically correct according to Merriam-Webster) — her plans to help him get a prosthetic leg are no longer necessary. But she’s still a bit peeved by his behavior, and taunts him with his ‘communication’ device, threatening to push the black button if he doesn’t at least thank her for taking care of him. He does, in a bit of a panic, but if the device is broken he shouldn’t have been so worried, right? But he was.
The device won’t power up because he needs a piece of alien technology, and Max and his friend Sahar (who we now know can’t see his alien form) don’t help, at first, when they just show up at his cabin while he tries to fix it. Max asks why he can’t just fly home and get the part he needs but then they realize that the government found and took his ship, so he is stranded. Sahar jabs further that there are ‘men in black’ looking for him, although they aren’t all men and don’t wear black but it sounds cooler than ‘people in clothes’. But there is one place on Earth where Harry may be able to find what he’s looking for — a UFO convention. If someone there has an abduction story, the tracking chip placed in them will help Harry repair his device. And then he can complete his mission and return home … if he finds his ship that is.
What he doesn’t know is that Mayor Ben and his wife Kate are having dinner with David and Lisa, the pair posing as a married couple to find the alien in Patience. Lisa is unusually interested in meeting Max, but he’s staying with a friend so they can all enjoy some adult time … and Ben is really, really upset that his usual taco night has been disrupted by these guests. Excusing herself to visit the powder room, Lisa goes to Max’s room and snoops around, finding a piece of Harry’s ship hidden in a box of candy. Kate finds her in the room and Lisa (they are using fake names with Ben and Kate) tells her that they can’t have children and that’s why she wanted to meet Max so badly. Kate, feeling for her new friend, says she is welcome to babysit Max any time. That makes Lisa extremely happy.
Meanwhile, D’Arcy is feeling left out of whatever is going on with Harry and Asta. She knows Asat is lying to her about taking Harry to Boulder for an MRI, but when they both ignore her calls, she begins to feel even more out of the loop. When Jay comes to interview D’Arcy about the rescue on the glacier, it really turns into questions about Asta that devolves into scenarios in which something bad has happened to her and Harry and that’s why D’Arcy can’t reach them. It’s too much for D’Arcy to think about and she goes to search for them.
Of course, Harry and Asta are just at the convention in New Mexico. Harry is appalled that people are dressed as aliens, saying his people aren’t a costume. Asta says ‘welcome to my world’. They attend a few seminars and finally settle on one hosted by Peter Bach (Terry O’Quinn), who claims to have had his own close encounter and invites members of the audience to share their own stories. One woman draws attention for her story of being abducted and tagged, complete with an X-ray. Most of the stories related how terrifying their experiences were but before Harry knows it, Asta is on stage talking about her own recent close encounter, providing a counterpoint to the others, telling of how nice her alien is and that maybe he’s here to help the planet. Harry just says to himself, ‘Nope.’
At the end of the seminar, Harry follows the woman and confronts her in a photo area, scalpel in hand to cut out her tracker. Panicked, she reveals it’s just a BB and she lied, but there is plenty of photo evidence of Harry accosting the woman. With that lead a failure, Harry then notices Bach is following him. Bach can see Harry’s true form, and he’s already threatened to zap any alien he finds with a 10,000 volt cattle prod. Asta does what she can to distract Bach so Harry can get away but he’s having a hard time navigating his way through the con floor. He does hide out in the dressing room for UFO expert Giorgio Tsoukalos, and after a lengthy chat about aliens, Harry tells the incredulous real-life TV host that he should be on TV. Bach breaks away from Asta, but then finds himself cornered by Alien Harry because Back has exactly what Harry needs implanted in his neck.
Back begs Harry not to remove the tracker because without it the aliens who took his unborn child — as was seen in a prologue to the episode set 30 years in the past — won’t be able to find him. Harry coldly tells him that the ‘Grays’ are not coming back for him. They got what they wanted.
In Patience, Liv is doing some karaoke, singing ‘Wind Beneath My Wings’ when Sheriff Mike enters the bar. After he found Liv and his dad having lunch, he assumed she spent the entire time talking about him but his father said she mostly listened, and maybe he should try that sometime. Back at the office, after the mayor congratulates him for the arrest of Sam’s wife for his murder, which he actually ‘solved’ by using Liv’s ‘murder board’ — but is Abigail Hodges the culprit, because she seemed to be trying to tell Mike something as he was arresting her at her salon — he goes to the bar, joins Liv and presents her with her badge like it was a marriage proposal. Liv is the town’s deputy again. but will Mike show her more respect now, or will Abigail’s arrest blow up in their faces?
D’Arcy arrives at Harry’s cabin, and finding no one there she slips in through the basement window. She notices the lock on the freezer and ignores it but before she can get up the stairs she goes back and knocks the lock off. She doesn’t see any sign of Asta in the freezer so she shuts the door and continues back upstairs but something nags at her to go back and look again. This time moving some frozen vegetables around, she finds … dead, frozen Doctor Harry Vanderspeigle.
Uh oh.
