Preacher :: Phase 2

AMC

Well, we got an answer to that question from the season premiere as to how Jesse ended up falling from the sky. But I have a more important question that needs to be addressed: how in the heck is Tulip moving her car around the world so quickly? We still don’t know how her car with the Illinois license plates got the Middle East and now she’s driving it around Australia! Something like that would take a lot of time if it were arriving by ship, and she and Cassidy have arrived Down Under just a day (or hours?) after Eugene shot Jesse, and is now in police custody. How is that car getting from place to place?!

This episode gave us one of the funnier scenes when Tulip and Cassidy were posing as US agents (with Joseph Gilgun even affecting a solid American accent) attempting to find out what happened to Jesse. Their faces as the Australian police officer started rambling at them in all sorts of Aussie slang was priceless. When they finally deciphered that Jesse was dead and the kid with the face like an arse killed him, Tulip was having none of it. Allowed to interrogate him, Eugene confirmed he shot Jesse and that he was dead. And if he wasn’t, he’d wish he was considering who he would be with.

And in fact Jesse is alive. Somehow. The Saint patched him up and is now using Jesse to lead him to God so he can kill him. At one point Jesse’s insolence forced The Saint to draw on him, and Jesse tried Genesis on him again, just to see if it worked on The Saint but he’s still immune to that power. And no matter how irritating Jesse can be, The Saint can’t actually kill him because Jesse’s the only person who can lead him to God … who, of course, is orchestrating this whole thing to bring Jesse to him. And we know that because Tulip ‘accidentally’ stumbled upon the camper van in which God has laid out his game board with all of the familiar items including figures of Himself and Jesse. Even the camper van Tulip is in, which should have been a warning but instead she focused on a postcard with the penis-shaped rock formation (actually called The Lost Prophet) and knew that’s where God was luring Jesse.

But on the way, a call came across the police radio about a murder which sidetracked them, thinking maybe they could catch up to Jesse and The Saint. It was definitely The Saint’s handiwork, lashing out for Jesse being so uncooperative and forcing him to do what The Saint wants without more innocent bloodshed, but still being one step behind them was frustrating to Tulip. But … she spotted a small aircraft and she and Cas took to the air to try and catch up with Jesse.

Meanwhile back at Masada, Jesus and Hitler are trying to negotiate terms for which souls go to Heaven after the Apocalypse and which ones go to Hell. Hitler’s not playing along with the whole someone can be a non-believer right up until their last seconds of life and suddenly repent to get into Heaven. He’s not buying that and it’s a real sticking point in the negotiations. But Herr Starr is notified by God that the plan is ready to move forward to Phase 2, which apparently consists of a nuclear bomb being detonated in the Australian Outback. Although that seems more a device to kill Jesse than actually start the Apocalypse. Starr is excited to launch Phase 2 and head to Australia where, ‘God willing’, he will get his good looks back for being such a devoted servant to the Lord. Or not. In fact, for being so overbearing about that promise, God unleashes a dingo on Starr which apparently rips off his twig and berries … because Starr was too tall for the animal to get to his throat, the traditional point of attack.

With Jesse and The Saint getting closer to the rock formation, Jesse hears a plane flying overhead and somehow he knows it’s Tulip and Cassidy. They release some flame retardant spray which makes it difficult for The Saint to see Jesse as he runs toward the plane, Cassidy reaching out to pull him inside. But Jesse’s getaway also thwarts God’s plan, causing him to detonate the bomb in rage, the blast jolting the plane and ripping the not-quite secured door off the side, pulling Jesse out. Cassidy grabs him but the direct contact with the sun’s rays cause his arm to burst into flames. Jesse tells Cassidy to let him go but he won’t. Finally he uses Genesis to get Cas to release him and that is how Jesse ended up falling thousands of feet to the hard ground below.

And that leave Tulip, Cassidy and the rest of us wondering if this is how Jesse Custer’s story ends — with four episodes remaining in the series — and if the blast took out The Saint, Starr and a large portion of the Outback. And how does this affect the negotiations for Apocalypse 2020, will they ever find Humperdoo, will Eugene make it out of prison, what will happen to Hoover Two, and what will Featherstone do now that she knows Starr is in Australia (overhearing his plans while disguised as a male barista at the Masada coffee shop)? The last four episodes should be a wild — and hopefully satisfying — ride.
