Moon Knight :: Summon the Suit

Disney Plus

When we last saw Steven Grant, he was about to be torn to ribbons by a supernatural jackal summoned by the villainous Arthur Harrow, who wants something Steven has — a scarab — and no matter how hard Steven has tried to give it to him, some other supernatural force won’t allow him to do so. Seeking refuge in the museum men’s room, Steven was also startled to see and hear his own reflection talking back to him, asking Steven to allow him to take over. Steven agrees and we see the Moon Knight going head-to-head with the beast which is now the one terrified for its life.

But for Steven, it’s all just another nightmare as he awakens in his bed, foot still securely shackled to the bed. He goes about his day but when he gets to work at the museum, he learns that something happened in the men’s room overnight and that he may be held responsible. Concerned that his nightmare may have been more real than he thought, Steven asks his friend in security to review the video footage where he sees himself cowering in the hallway, nearly knocking over an artifact and running into the men’s room. But when he comes out and looks straight at the security camera, Steven knows that man who looks like him is not him. Nonehteless, Steven gets sacked and is told to seek therapy.

But Steven is determined to figure out what’s going on and he decides to find the storage locker that is associated with the key he found hidden in his flat with the cell phone. He finally finds the right location, and the man at the desk says he recognizes Steven and shows him to his locker. Steven, of course, has never been here and when the locker is opened he finds what is more like a furnished bunker with the unfortunate addition of very reflective walls … which means Steven’s reflection begins speaking to him again. The reflection is named Marc Spector, and he explains to Steven that they are avatars for the Egyptian god Khonshu, the god of punishment to evil-doers. But Marc has a mission to complete for Khonshu and asks Steven to lay down and have a little nap, and when he wakes up he can get on with his life. Steven refuses, finds the scarab in a duffel bag and heads to the police station.

Steven is pursued by Khonshu through the storage facility, and outside he’s greeted by Layla, the woman from the phone calls. Apparently she is his wife, or rather Marc’s wife, and she doesn’t understand why he hasn’t contacted her for months and why he’s speaking with a British accent. Steven tries to explain that he isn’t Marc but she’s still not buying the act. And, in fact, she’s been trying to track him down to sign the divorce papers. Before Steven can process any of this, two police officers show up at his flat. Layla goes out the window to avoid them, and they take Steven but not to the police station. Instead they end up in a small town where he’s greeted by Harrow, who explains how this town has been transformed from a place of fear to a place of peacefulness, to the point that no one locks their doors anymore. Arthur also knows that Steven can hear Khonshu speaking to him, repeating almost verbatim what Steven is hearing in his head at that moment. Arthur tells him he can ignore the voice, but he still wants that scarab. Arthur explains that Khonshu’s methods of punishing the bad guys is pretty useless because the vengeance come after their deeds have been committed. Arthur is the avatar of the god Ammit, who eradicates the evil before it happens. This means that even an innocent child could be murdered for something it might do many years down the road. Steven is not on board with that because situations could change before the alleged act is committed. Steven catches a glimpse of Marc who tells him not to reveal to Arthur that Layla has the scarab which acts as a compass to the tomb of Ammit, whom Arthur and his acolytes want to set free to cleanse the planet of evil.

Layla shows up, a fight ensures and as things go from bad to worse she tells Steven to summon the suit. He really has no idea what she’s talking about but as he falls out of a window he somehow manages to do what she said and he summons the suit. Except it’s not the same suit we saw when Moon Knight was in the museum men’s room. This is more like … a three-piece suit, still the same off-white color with the mask, making Steven look like a dapper mummy, or as Marc notes, a ‘deranged Colonel Sanders.’ And things go from worse to terrible as another jackal beast is summoned. Marc tells Steven to let him take care of it but Steven, now kind of digging this suit, says he can take care of it, giving the beast a strong punch … which just stuns it. Steven continues to fight, and the people in the village just see a madman flailing about in the street. Feeling that he’s about to lose this battle, Steven allows Marc to take over and he summons the real Moon Knight suit, fighting off the jackal.

With the beast gone, the suit vanishes but … Marc is now in control with Steven trapped on the other side and he’s not happy. Khonshu returns and tells Marc he needs to get the scarab, and Marc tells him he will get it from Layla and their business will be done. But Khonshu tells Marc that he secretly loves this work he does for the god, and should they ever part company he may not like Khonshu’s next candidate for his avatar, someone near and dear to Marc’s heart. Of course he is referring to Layla. Not wanting that to happen, Marc is almost resigned to his fate, asking Khonshu where they’re going. Suddenly Marc is in Egypt, overlooking he Great Pyramids. Now it’s going to be a race to stop Harrow from unleashing Ammit on the world and saving Layla from Khonshu. Poor Steven is just along for the ride at this point, but he does have one thing Marc does not — an intimate knowledge of Egyptian history that may come in handy.
