Mission: Impossible – Fallout is Ethan Hunt’s most impossible mission yet

Paramount Pictures

Twenty-two years ago, Tom Cruise starred in his first Mission: Impossible film directed by Brian De Palma. He went on to star in five more films, including the newest entry, Mission: Impossible – Fallout. Cruise has faithfully been IMF’s top agent, Ethan Hunt for many years now and it is hard to imagine anyone else playing the role. The Mission: Impossible franchise is a franchise that keeps getting better with age, just like Tom Cruise. After Mission: Impossible III, each film has offered bigger action scenes and deeper spy missions. My expectations were high for the sixth entry since Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation had some of the biggest action scenes of this decade. I honestly wasn’t expecting Fallout to be better than the previous movies, but here I am, saying it is.

Mission: Impossible – Fallout is directed by Christopher McQuarrie, director of Rogue Nation, making him the first director to film more than one Mission: Impossible film. In the newest entry, Ethan Hunt and his team must track down stolen plutonium while being monitored by a CIA agent after a mission goes awry. Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Alec Baldwin, Sean Harris, Rebecca Ferguson, and Michelle Monaghan all reprise their roles from previous films while Henry Cavill, Angela Bassett, and Vanessa Kirby join the franchise.

The stunts performed by Tom Cruise are all real and outstanding. Tom Cruise makes every scene look easy and genuine. The action scenes are adrenaline pumping and oh, is there plenty of them. There are many different types of action scenes such as boat chases, fights in helicopters, foot chases, car chases, and much more. I was constantly on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next. I was impressed that with each passing action scene, it managed to excite me more. From Tom Cruise running along a rooftop or speeding through oncoming traffic on a motorcycle, there is nothing Tom Cruise won’t do for a movie!

The acting is solid in Fallout and is a little less jokey this time around, especially from Simon Pegg. He brings less comedy to the table and is more serious as his character wants to be more active alongside Rhames and Cruise. I have always felt Pegg’s character could do more and this was the perfect time for him to shine. Henry Cavill provides the most memorable side character in all six Mission: Impossible movies. His swagger and brute strength challenges Hunt. The first action scene with Cavill and Cruise takes place in a bathroom and left me in total shock. Rebecca Ferguson improves a lot from her debut in Rogue Nation as Ilsa Faust. She is given more action scenes and is an important piece to the story. Michelle Monaghan returns as Hunt’s ex-wife and seeing her on screen made me miss her from the previous movie since she adds a personal touch to Hunt’s character. Sean Harris is just as menacing the second time around as Solomon Lane, but Ving Rhames still remains one of my favorite characters in the franchise.

The story is a detailed one with the crew traveling from country to country to obtain the plutonium and be in full spy mode. The movie doesn’t use too much technology this time around compared to previous films and that allows for the story to develop nicely. I don’t mind the technology in the previous movies but having limited technology in this entry makes the mission feel impossible.

Mission: Impossible – Fallout is easily my favorite Mission: Impossible movie. The multiple action scenes are grand and thrilling. All of the breathtaking locations adds a boost of energy and it really puts you in the scene. Ethan Hunt endures his greatest mission yet with his team and delivers one of the best action movies of recent years. I thought it would be impossible for this film to exceed the status the last two movies created, but I was proven wrong instantly.

Action Point has a run time of 2 hour 27 minutes and is rated PG-13 for violence and intense sequences of action, and for brief strong language.
