Grey’s Anatomy :: All Star

ABC

Nice to see that the elevators are still getting some action! We got a great kiss between Lucas and Simone in the elevator! Just before they returned home to discover Simone’s … ex-fiance? Ex-boyfriend? Whatever he is — there — let in by Yoshida — with flowers ready to pick up wherever it was that they left off. At least Lucas wasn’t head over heels in love with her only discover that she was secretly married and fled her marriage because of infidelity like the whole Mer-Der-Addison debacle.

Teddy battled the patriarchy all episode long. With Webber being made out to be the bad guy because he didn’t want to give her what she deserves as chief. Yes, it’s a budget and numbers incident — but he played the Bailey side of that coin when he helped Alex get a good offer to be the Peds attending back in the day when Hunt was chief. Bailey plotting to set up Teddy for the win was so on brand for Bailey. And the minute Amelia walked in declaring her interest, you just knew it was a Bailey-motivated move. Which Amelia fully admits to — ‘You’re welcome. Bailey sent me in here. I don’t want to be chief of surgery!’

So Teddy gets what she wants, mostly. Except she walks right out into the epic sh*tstorm of media nightmares because of the high-profile patient in the hospital. But more on that — can we just pause and look at how amazing it is that this show has truly allowed Amelia to transform into this sage, wise, incredibly respectable person? Showing that you can live with the disease of addiction, keep it in check and still be a strong, incredible person who can dispense sage, logical, and heartfelt advice? And play a little dirty when necessary to help another woman get what she deserves? GO Amelia!

So fictitious Seahawks draft-pick ‘Tank’ at 22 and well over 340 pounds comes in for a flashy knee-repair surgery. And you know right from the off this is going to be Link’s ‘patient of no-return’. That’s just how Grey’s rolls. There was no world wherein that kid was going to survive the episode. The surgery — yes. Because that was a brilliant success. But ultimately the patient threw a clot, resulted in a PE and was unable to be resuscitated. Which sends Link spiraling … though at least he hasn’t (yet) gone completely off the rails the way all the doctors who take that blow have before him. (He’s not out in the trailer … does the trailer even still exist? I think Owen sold it some seasons ago … and not stuck to the couch refusing to come in or shower … or burned out in the basement … yet.)

The true beautiful patient story this week was Jules and Jo working together to help a patient who was eleven weeks pregnant. Spotting but otherwise a healthy pregnancy, the result of a broken condom with her husband. And listening to the harrowing tale of the severe, almost life-ending, month-long occurrences of her postpartum depression was heartbreaking. Fearing that she’ll go through that again, and not survive it to raise the two children she already has, the patient inquires about an abortion. It’s presented to her as a sliding-scale fee through the clinic and Jo & Jules walk her through every step of the procedures in live time. (Granted not every DNC procedure will be that textbook, that smooth, or that quick, but it was a beautiful learning moment for the audience to see how safe and necessary such a thing is.)

ABC

THAT was the winner of this week. Bar none.

There was also the funny patient (there’s nothing all that funny about severe constipation … but as it ended up not being surgical and the patient was just fine … albeit not so bright in the decision-making process) which Lucas and Yoshida got to tackle. Guy attempted and failed an eating challenge at a Pho restaurant — 3 pounds of meat, 3 pounds of noodles, 3 pounds of broth in under 90 minutes. And five days later … no poo. This brought back some memories of the original interns (and Lexi later) about who got what bedroom as the outcome of the patient was being bet upon by Yoshida & Lucas for who got what bedroom.

Remember the sh*tstorm that Teddy walked into minutes after accepting the role of chief? The press — en mass — screaming and demanding answers wanting to know if Doctor Lincoln killed/was responsible for the death of The Tank? Owen barricade blocked her, sort of like he did when he escorted Callie into or maybe out of the courtroom some seasons ago when she was on trial for that snowboarder Travis Reed. It was lovely to see him protecting his wife, even though their marriage is perpetually on the rocks.

That’s a rocky marriage where love is the foundation and they will make it work.

Maggie and Winston however … they’re just about done. Winston even told her ‘not everyone can be resuscitated’ meaning her or their marriage and walked away. They jumped into it too soon and Maggie has always been not my favorite character. (She’s never been particularly good at being an equal in a relationship … girl’s got a track record … still not over how Meredith took up her sloppy seconds with DeLuca … but hey.)

Allison bit Pru at daycare and Schmidt was — well Schmidt. Next week looks like we’re diving into the return of Simone’s whatever-he-is and how or if she’ll make the choice of Lucas. Also they throw a party. How many parties has that house seen over the years? The wild, the mild, the marital, and then some. Add one more to the list as of next week!
