Does anybody else have character-death-trust issues because of the Shondaland Roller-Coaster-of-Death? So when we watch Nick Marsh at the beginning of the episode biking at speed around those twisty roads — did anyone else see his life (and the future of MerMarsh) flash before their eyes? Just me? Okay.
Still not quite sure how this 1,500-mile-apart thing is going to work. If MerDer couldn’t make Seattle-DC work … MerMarsh is not going to make this work. His niece is grown up, just bring him to Seattle for crying out loud. (It was nice to see Zola for a hot second … aren’t there two other Grey-Shepherd children though?)
It was, however, refreshing to see that ‘other side’ of the transplant surgeon and how very important that moment was with Nick and the donor family. ‘Never forget they’re a person too. They’re somebody’s somebody.’ THAT was striking. (And also — pulse-racing because the whole time it was a little too ‘what if that liver goes belly up?’) I think that’s part of what keeps us coming back to Grey’s — even when it’s smooth sailing we’re terrified the ferryboat is going to crash.
Not sure how/why Link decided he was going to be the champion of Hunt (or was there an episode between last week and this week that ended up unaired where everyone put Hunt in his pissy mood?) But dragging him through physical therapy seemed to be working for them both … right up until he had a CFS leak. (He’s fine.) And Amelia almost got paged out of the ground-breaking-Parkinsons surgery.
There’s a lot happening here but it can all be unpacked really, really simply. Teddy and Jo spend the day bitching and day-drinking about how it needs to be okay to love their kids but also need ‘mommy-alone’ time. (Which should be a thing.) And they don’t become monsters, neglectful, or bad moms because they take time to tend to their own traumas. (Mer’s been doing it for years, though to be fair she had Derek for the infancy of the first two.) Did nobody else hear Jo silently screaming about ‘we were friends and now I love him but he’s with somebody else’ and wait for Teddy to raise her hand and say ‘Also me — except Owen and Cristina? Owen and Amelia?’ Also — hot nekkid Link in the shower — YOWEE. And Jo and her ‘yes move out/no don’t move out’ has Izzie-George bells all over it. Eww. Move on.
Nice to see Koracick back. He just gives everyone the giggles, even as he’s called in to save Owen. Because Amelia can’t leave the room. (Where it happened. Amelia is Hamilton.) She should not be jumping into anything with Kai Bartley. Not because Kai Bartley isn’t amazing, not because Amelia can’t have a complicated sexual interest in a non-binary individual. BECAUSE AMELIA IS A MESS AND KAI DESERVES BETTER. Amelia is where Owen was — she has no idea just how to be herself and know what she wants without being quick-coupled up with her flavor of the moment. And Kai is too interesting of a character to get dragged into Cyclone Amelia.
That new intern-resident (who is so cringy I have zero interest in learning his name) was putting my teeth on edge the whole episode. Bailey and her back-flirt wasn’t helping matters. Though I’m so so pleased to see her flip out when he kissed her. It was like Jackson and Cristina at — was that Amelia and Owen’s wedding? Or somebody’s wedding. NOPE. NEVER GONNA HAPPEN.
Webber went to the ‘woods’ to rescue Schmidt. But Schmidt is a self-proclaimed bleed out. Meredith forced open the super secret surgery with Hamilton and the Parkinson’s research because it’s a teaching hospital.
All in all, a feel good episode. Except that clearly Link has the feels for Jo and she can’t wrap her head around that. And Teddy — who even confesses at Owen’s bedside (after he survives his CFS leak repair) that she is struggling to forgive him (again — did he tell her? that sort of went out on an unexplained cliffy last week and I swear it feels like half an episode is missing between last week and this week …) even though he forgave her — FOR SLEEPING WITH TOM. And what she did was so, so worse. HOW CAN SHE BE SO AGAINST WHAT HE’S DOING!? She was the one who assisted a patient years ago as the physician with the drugs when Owen was so horribly against it. Is there something that I’ve missed in this transaction here?
Next week has more MerMarsh and more Kaimelia. And some freaky flashback letter from Ellis (Kate Burton recurrence?!?) to ‘Margaret’ the baby we never knew about until years later …
