This week’s Grey’s Anatomy was a beautifully balanced episode; I feel like I rarely say that anymore, but we had patient focus, doctor focus, and ups-and-downs with relationships all across the board. And we’re still tripping down memory lane, so I applaud Shonda & team for finally acknowledging the fact that we’re just recycling plot. If you’re going to do it, and they’re doing it, do it with confidence, gusto, and just own it. And this week they did. The intern trauma cert — that was ridiculous. Some much needed levity, I suppose (though nothing compares to Alex Karev and his terribly awful no-good very bad naming abilities when suggesting things like “Fanny Spanner” for the name of Bailey’s new device), but just one more nail in Kepner’s coffin.
Props to Parker who just slammed her out of the water … literally. He’s smart and sharp and of the interns I like him the best, followed very closely by Qadri. Still don’t care about the rest. I think it’s noble what they’re trying to do so that when April bites the dust we feel for her. But she’s never been a fan favorite and I can’t believe I’m saying this but I actually think I preferred her when she whiny. This “bad-ass trauma bitch” routine is just obnoxious. I get that she’s got severe PTSD over losing Samuel, not to mention everything she encountered in the war, and then basically losing her ex-fiancé’s pregnant wife was a particularly hard hit while she was still coping, but this spiraling out-of-control rage monster is just repetitive and is starting to get very predictable and boring. Could you just freaking kill her off already?!?
The Kepner BS aside, I love, love, LOVE that we got to see Bailey’s nerdiness in action! Maggie’s too! That was exciting. NASA astronauts who clock 1,000+ hours in space are going to have all sorts of problems, so you knew that wasn’t going to end well from the start, but it was still pretty damn cool and taught us all a valuable lesson. That quote she gave about not being the person who says no because then all you have is your past and your regrets, mistakes, and failures? But if you say maybe then you open the door to a million futures? Words to live by. AND it sparked Jo to kick Meredith’s ass back into gear. Shame on Maggie for saying that she’s the proof that Ellis was a dirty scandalous cheater, which we all know she was, but nobody needs it rubbed in their faces. (Also Jo is super badass, she called Meredith a wormhole.)
Really glad to see that the contest is still on track, sort of. (What happened to Kimmy? Did she die between episodes or have we just moved on?) Bailey is pushing hard for it, with her “Trailblazer” and now that Jo put Meredith back on her confidence horse, that’s well under way. I loved the beautiful family dynamic — after all the messy tangly bits — of the Richard-Catherine-Jackson spinout. It was really beautiful seeing Catherine confess what it was really all about. DAMN! ;-) That wasn’t without its humor, though, and glad to see Richard being sensible about the whole thing. (PS – we’re waaaay too jazzed about sex around here … it’s not like Harriet’s going away? Unless of course she gets killed with Kepner, which would suck … so why wouldn’t they just go have actual dinner with Harriet there? She’s too young to be worried or even notice that daddy is with someone who is not mommy.)
Teddy. Teddy. Teddy. All we’re doing is talkin’ Teddy. Is Kim Raver coming back and someone forgot to mention it? Does anybody wanna go fetch Cristina while we’re at it? Poor Owen. He’s a hot mess. But I mean, Amelia’s not wrong (and did anybody else have that momentary WTF moment when Arizona said she had to go ask Dr. Karev & Dr. Shepherd some questions b/c whenever someone says Dr. Shepherd we’re still all waiting to see McDreamy? Or was that just me …) So Owen’s hopped in a taxi, internationally outbound to go find Teddy. Maybe he’ll bring her back. Or maybe he’ll stay there … don’t’ recall anything about Kevin McKidd also leaving, but anything is possible.
The biggest and most rewarding part of this episode was Arizona and Sofia. The child she didn’t want but jumped on board with because she loved Callie. Mark Sloan’s baby; and all of the beauty that went with that today was stunning. I love that when she was trying to address Sofia’s issues at the top of the episode she said ‘you miss your mommy’ not ‘your other mommy’ or not anything else. If more divorced families could recognize that THIS is the proper way to co-parent? It could solve so many unnecessary problems. She may not love Callie anymore (though a part of me thinks she always will just a little bit) but she recognizes that Callie loves Sofia and Sofia loves Callie and that Callie is 100% her mommy. Also all the ‘bring your daughter to work day’ bonding was awesomesauce. Here’s hoping THAT doesn’t get ruined by whatever diabolical plot device Shonda is saving for the end of the season. We’re all getting our hopes up that it’s Kepner who’s going to die … and that Arizona just moves to New York (with Female DeLuca possibly) to bring Sofia closer to both her mommies … when in reality, Shonda will do something heinous and kill off poor Arizona while Kepner walks lost into the parking lot of no return.
And where was Dr. Ally McBeal this week? Shouldn’t he be sweeping in to romance Amelia now that Owen’s gone again? All in all a great episode. I’m still too pissed about Private Practice being an epic flop … so I don’t know if I’m ready to give Station 19 a shot. Time will tell. But for now, it’s GA all the way (and who is this no-name coming into next week’s episode to wake up Meredith’s heart? So quickly poor Nathan has been forgot …)
