Well, unlike last season when the world was turned upside-down and television production was forced to grind to a halt, we actually got a full 22-episode season of Dynasty this year, albeit with a much delayed debut and an extremely late conclusion. But at least we got some outlandish entertainment over the last five months. And we got a real cliffhanger this year (even though it’s unlikely anyone important will actually die, but we’ll get to that).
All the players were accounted for this week, including Anders, but the main focus was on Fallon, Blake, Adam and … Jeff? Yes, Jeff Colby’s story has come to the forefront in recent weeks so let’s start there. He’s still convinced his mother’s ex/not ex Brady has come to Atlanta not to take Dominique’s money but to steal his intellectual property for his spaceship plans. Dom, having seen what appear to be the scribblings of a madman on the walls, is certain Jeff needs some type of medical attention and she finally gets him to admit he hasn’t been taking his anti-toxin medication, which certainly accounts for his wild behavior. Knowing he won’t listen to her, Dom asks Culhane to talk some sense into him but he says he’s already tried and failed. But he knows a psychiatrist who he can call in for a favor.
Brady pays a visit to Dom to ask her to dinner, but she’s too wrapped up in Jeff’s problems now and stupidly tells Brady about Jeff’s wild accusations against him wanting her money. Brady runs right back to Alexis to tell her he’s about ready to forget about their plan, but she assures him everything is under control. He also alerts her to Jeff’s speculations and says he needs to be brought under control. Of course she knows she can handle Jeff, all Brady has to do is keep playing along and show up at Blake’s campaign fundraiser event with Dom. But Jeff has other plans when Dom shows up at his place to tell him help is on the way. Feigning a migraine, he manages to handcuff his mother to a shelving unit and runs off with a gun, knowing exactly where Brady will be.
One big question is will there even be a fundraiser. Sam is freaking out because he had a premonition that something terrible is going to happen at the event, and then he gets the terrible news that … Dua Lipa is stuck in San Francisco and won’t be able to perform. After having a fond memory of Anders giving him a pep talk when Sam was first opening La Mirage, Sam calmly receives the news from Kirby and tells her he’s got it under control.
Unfortunately for Blake, more bad news about his underhanded dealings have hit the press, courtesy of Cristal’s brother, and if something doesn’t happen to make him stop, the entire campaign could collapse. Cristal assures him she can handle Beto, but when she goes to have lunch with him, he only wants one thing — the family business which he believes is rightfully his. And he won’t budge. Feeling that the only way to save the campaign is to give him what he wants, Blake refuses to let Cristal deal with a blackmailer and hand over the business. It’s time to do things the Carrington way now, so they call Beto to the manor under the pretext of giving him what he wants, but what Blake and Cristal actually lay on him is that unless he drops his vendetta against Cristal, she will call their father and let him know exactly who turned him in to the authorities. Check and mate, Beto. And the event seems to be moving ahead at full steam.
Amanda comes to Fallon’s office to see if she’s okay since she hasn’t been home and finds her at her office, fresh out of booze to console her broken heart. Knowing Eva keeps a spare bottle in her desk, she finds a copy of Liam’s book and a photograph from the awards ceremony Fallon missed but Eva did not. Thinking this is the proof that Eva is behind her problems, Amanda tells her to pump the breaks because that is hardly evidence. So Fallon ropes her new sister into another one of her schemes to dig up some dirt on Eva. Which Amanda says was hard to find because that’s not her real name. Aha! More proof. Also, she got kicked out of college for stalking a professor. When Eva shows up at the office, Fallon confronts her much more calmly than even Fallon herself expected, telling her to take the day off since she’s been working so hard. Armed with her ‘evidence’, Fallon tries to present it all to Liam but he says that Eva didn’t make Fallon sleep with Colin. Touché.
The next time Fallon sees Eva at the office, she confronts her with the evidence Amanda dug up but Eva denies everything and leaves, running straight for Liam, telling him that Fallon screamed at her and narrowly missed hitting her in the head with a thrown coffee cup. Fallon once again tries to prove to Liam how Eva has manipulated them both into this bad situation, and he said until recently he would have believed every word she said but … throwing a coffee cup at Eva is a bit much. And the only reason he agreed to meet with her is because he actually has contacted a divorce lawyer this time. Back at the office, Eva shows up to collect her things, telling Fallon her time there is up and when pushed she admits to Fallon that she was behind all the manipulations that got Liam on her side. Which leads to a classic Dynasty catfight that we have not seen on the show in quite some time (probably since Nicolette Sheridan was Alexis?). Unfortunately, Liam also shows up and the scene only reinforces his belief that Fallon did throw a coffee cup at Eva. He helps her gather her things and they leave together.
Adam has found himself in a bit of a pickle with Dr. Larson who, now that he has all of his original research, is going to drop a bomb on Adam unless he pays up. Adam offers him a few hundred thousand dollars, but Larson isn’t biting. He wants half the future profits and a $5 million advance. Adam is a Carrington, after all, so he should have no trouble coughing up that money. Adam decides to bury the hatchet with Alexis and asks her to board his project, and she now fancies herself an anti-aging spokesperson. Adam also shames her into ‘contributing’ $5 million to the project as an investment. She agrees to give him a check, and plans to take Adam to Blake’s event so they can hit on some wealthy donors. Adam asks Larson to meet him at Alexis’ apartment because you don’t pay off a blackmailer at your own home, apparently, but when Larson begins to make more demands as they chat on the balcony — he wants his name on the project to further his career — Adam gets a strange look in his eyes.
At the campaign event, Sam unveils a plaque honoring Anders before the event starts, and gets the news that Dua Lipa is there! (Well, we have to take Kirby’s word on that.) By staying calm, Sam was able to pull off the event, and the ghost of Anders appears to him to tell him that he’s not God and he had nothing to do with lifting the San Francisco fog to get Dua Lipa to Atlanta. And, in fact, he did nothing to make this event happen … because he’s not there. He tells Sam that he did this himself and he should be proud of his accomplishments, telling him that he no longer needs him to be a success. And with that, Anders walks away into the crowd, most certainly the last time anyone will see him.
As the event progresses, Blake wants the family on stage but Fallon says he’s going to have to call Liam himself since he told Fallon their marriage was over. Blake tells her he’s sorry but he’s still proud of everything she’s accomplished in life. Brady has stepped outside to call Dom to see if she’s coming, and finds himself confronted by Jeff and his gun, making crazy accusations about Brady stealing his tech. Brady genuinely has no idea what Jeff is talking about, but Jeff mentions he knows Brady has been working with Alexis since he’s been tracking Brady through his GPS, thanks to a link in an email Brady clicked on. Knowing that Jeff knows Brady was with Alexis is troubling, but the fact that he’s about to be shot is a little more problematic. Luckily Culhane showed up at Jeff’s apartment and Dom told him what was going on, so he got to La Mirage and tackled Jeff before he could pull the trigger. During their scuffle, Brady ran off but now the deranged Jeff is ready to plug Culhane.
Meanwhile, Adam is acting odd, seemingly avoiding Alexis and when she tracks him down in a hallway, they are confronted by the police, there to arrest … Alexis, for the murder of Dr. Larson who was found dead on the sidewalk in front of her building. Surprised by this accusation, they say someone reported an argument on her balcony between the deceased and a woman matching her description. Adam assures her he will get her out of jail … but after she’s hauled away it’s quite clear he is the one who called the police. First he pushed her face in a fire, and now this?!
Inside, the Carrington clan has gathered on stage for a photo op and in walks Liam. After he and Eva left Fallon’s office, she was at his hotel room and started saying how great it was that she could help him see Fallon for who she was. That sounded odd. Liam asked if she knew Colin would be in the office that night she asked him to drop off her necklace, and just how did her necklace happen to fall off in his car where he’d see it. The more Eva talked, the more it became apparent that Fallon was right all along about Eva, so he asked her to leave before he called security. Now he’s taking his place on stage next to Fallon, for the family, but he admitted she was right about Eva. That doesn’t excuse what she did with Colin but he’s now willing to work out their problems. Yay! What they don’t see as the confetti rains down is Beto in one corner of the club drawing a gun with either Blake or Cristal as his target. They also don’t see Eva walk in from the other side of the room, also drawing a gun. Now three guns are drawn … and one goes off. It’s not Jeff’s, so Culhane is safe. It’s not Beto’s, and when he see what’s happened he takes off.
It was Eva’s. Liam and Fallon both look in her direction and then look down to see blood all over Fallon’s white dress. She has been shot in the abdomen and collapses on the stage. Security grabs Eva, and the Carringtons and other security gather around Fallon, Liam screaming for someone to help her (umm, Dr. Adam Carrington is standing RIGHT. THERE. Doing nothing). As Fallon slips into unconsciousness … the season ends. Now the question is when does the show return (not until sometime in 2022), and will there be a time jump with Fallon recovered and Blake a senator? Hard to say at this point, but the one thing I can say is that this has been the most consistently enjoyable season with the writers finally finding a good balance between the humor, the camp and the drama, and knowing without a doubt that ELixabeth Gillies is the foundation upon which this show firmly rests. Of course Fallon won’t die, because without her there is no Dynasty. But will Steven remain the forgotten Carrington? And with Amanda becoming a regular next season, can we expect any other classic characters making their debuts like, perhaps, Dex Dexter?
Thanks for hanging out with us over these last 22 weeks, and be sure to check back when Season 5 starts! And feel free to check out our other TV and movie reviews until then.
