The second season of Dynasty has come to an end, and while it didn’t go out in a blaze of glory like the first season, this ender left the fates of almost all the characters hanging in the balance. And while none of the core cast seems to be in any mortal danger this year — no, there won’t be a third Cristal, although Fallon had a funny line addressing that possibility — there was one beloved character who seems to have bitten the dust. Sadly, and as much as I had hoped for his demise, Adam is sticking around.
The events of the finale were set into motion by Blake’s arrest by the Feds and his and Cristal’s subsequent attempts to turn it all around and frame Culhane by planting the $5 million in his apartment and tying him to Ada. But Blake’s arrest messed up Fallon’s plans as well, dragging her into more ‘family business’, something she’d been trying to extricate herself from with her new publishing company. But that door slam on Cristal’s leg set off a ‘Blake’s a violent abuser of women’ media firestorm which Fallon was forced to address — even though Cristal refused to comment because she had to keep up the charade that she and Blake had separated — and then was thrown for a loop when former Carrington Atlantic employees alleged he was also violent towards them (Blake’s rationale that throwing a stapler at the wall wasn’t actually abusive to the women). But with a publishing company built on embracing women, Fallon taking a stand with her father put all of that in jeopardy, forcing her to consider selling her shares in the Atlantix team back to Blake … which she couldn’t because he could not own the team again until the federal charges were dropped. Instead, Blake suggested Fallon forget about her publishing company, her dream of being a self-made woman, and stand with the family, hold them together while all this is going on, and rejoin the business. It’s her birthright, after all. And she actually considered it.
Until she learned that Blake and Cristal were not separated and we’re about to get married in secret. You know what they say about a woman scorned, and Fallon is not a woman to be trifled with. She warned Culhane that he was being set up and told him to burn the money, but Blake and Cristal actually planted another bag of money in his apartment that the Feds would find when they came to arrest him … and arrest him they did, which put Fallon’s plans of selling her stake in the Atlantix to Culhane on ice.
Culhane’s arrest is also going to have a huge impact on the relationship between Fallon and Kirby. When Fallon learned the pair were dating (again), Fallon warned Culhane to end it. Then to protect Femperial, she sold the company to Kirby for $1.00 with a deal to buy it back after she sold her Atlantix stock. Except Kirby found out that Fallon ordered Culhane to end the relationship which didn’t feel like something the head of a company that claimed to empower women should do, so Kirby’s keeping Femperial for herself.
We still don’t know what exactly is going on between Blake and Dominique. Jeff has learned that whatever was in the paint that Adam had put in his office has given him neurotoxicity, which is damaging his brain cells. It’s not curable, only manageable, but it will impair his cognitive abilities and motor skills. But if Jeff can’t prove Adam was responsible, he will get him another way. Staging a fight with Adam in the office for witnesses to see, Jeff went missing for 24 hours. A frantic Dominique found his car in the garage with papers strewn about and blood all over the place. Turns out Jeff — and his mother and sister — have staged Jeff’s ‘murder’, pinning it on Adam with the help of a cuff link Jeff grabbed during their fight. Jeff is off to the Bahamas to wait out Adam’s fate but … what he doesn’t know is that his mother betrayed him, taking the cuff link from the scene of ‘the crime’ and telling Blake that Jeff is no longer a problem, securing Blake’s promise that the mysterious payments he’s been making to her would continue.
Anders survived his episode — it apparently wasn’t a heart attack, or at least just a mild one — and was back at work for the Carringtons despite doctor’s orders to get some rest. But Kirby has laid out some hard truths to her father. When he was in the hospital, Kirby, Sam and Culhane were the only people to visit him. If Blake cared so much, why wasn’t he there? Anders tried to make excuses about how busy Mr. Carrington is, but deep down he knew she was right. Blake needs Anders but he doesn’t respect Anders. Knowing that Sam is up to his ears in trouble trying to run a hotel, Anders pops in to save the day … and offer his services now that he’s planning to leave the Carringtons.
We did learn one new bit of information about Fallon’s — and Anders’ — past. When she was a teenager, a girlfriend of hers was at the manor, drunk out of her mind. Fallon tries to prevent her friend Trixie from leaving but as she was trying to hold on to her arm, Fallon’s grip slipped and Trixie went right over the railing, crashing onto the marble floor below. Panicked, she asked Anders for help and he assured her that he would take care of everything. After that night, everyone assumed Trixie just ran away and Fallon had no clue what happened. She revealed this news to Liam after she learned he had a ten year old daughter (thanks to a letter planted on her desk by Adam), and of course Adam was lurking about to hear this new revelation (which he kind of already knew as we saw in a flashback of him with Steven when he was posing as the Brit). But the personal drama of the past didn’t impact Fallon and Liam’s relationship, with Fallon proposing to Liam in the middle of the pond by the manor. And then she dropped the ring into the water.
As the episode was coming to a close with Blake and Cristal about to be married, Liam and Adam had a few terse words which led to Adam picking up a planter and bashing Liam over the head, dragging him into a storage closet. Adam also ‘helpfully’ hired a diving team to retrieve the ring … but he was almost certainly hoping to find something else. As Fallon was railing at Blake and Cristal, and learning of Kirby’s betrayal, Liam managed to get out of the storage area, but with some severe cranial trauma he stumbled right into the pool, face down while everyone else was on the other side of the pond. RIP Liam? Or is there some staff at the manor who will find him in time?
Anders also chose this moment to tell Blake that he was quitting right then and there, but the shock of that announcement was overtaken by the divers in the pond. They found a body. A man, and it’s only been there a short time. It’s the man Blake wrongly killed, believing he was the one who caused Cristal’s miscarriage and killed Mark Jennings. But wait … there’s a second body. One that’s been there for years. A girl. Trixie.
And that is where we leave our dysfunctional Carrington clan until Season 3 starts in the Fall. How will they get out of this mess? Will Steven return? Will Alexis come back with a new face … or with Nicolette Sheridan’s face? How long will it take Jeff to learn of his mother’s betrayal? At the end of Season 1, we only had to worry about the fates of a few people — Alexis, Cristal, Steven and Culhane — but this year just about everyone is facing some sort of peril. It will be interesting to see how the writers get the characters out of their collective messes.
