Since The Muppets changed its format a few weeks ago, we’ve been seeing slightly less of Miss Piggy hogging the spotlight and more from the secondary characters that I love so much. Uncle Deadly was finally given his due, as we learned a little bit more about what he does after work. It turns out he’s been directing a stage production of Clueless in which all of the roles have had their genders swapped … and it easily stole this week’s episode titled “Got Silk?”
When Miss Piggy finds herself feeling a little lost now that the show isn’t centered quite as heavily on her, she realizes she doesn’t have any friends to help fill the void in her life. She begins to discuss this with Uncle Deadly, but the only advice he is able to muster comes in the form of a diversionary tactic about discussing new snacks. When Janice stops by her office, Miss Piggy asks her where she makes friends and one suggestion ends up being her aerial contortion group.
Something about the idea of traipsing around on silk curtains in the air is appealing to Miss Piggy and she agrees to accompany Janice there in the hopes of making new friends. She also coerces Uncle Deadly to shadow her. However, the effort is made in vain because Miss Piggy tends to have a condescending manner about her that scares off any potential would-be friends. In the end, she realizes Uncle Deadly has been her one true friend all along. But more on that later.
The other major plot involved the return of the wily branding guru played by The Mindy Project’s Utkarsh Ambudkar. He was back to thwart Kermit’s leadership over the writing team, attempting to bribe them into writing skits with clever (well, the use of clever is certainly questionable) advertising placements by taking them out for a fancy lunch and buying them new suits. Gonzo, Rizzo the Rat and Pepe the Prawn have never looked more dashing, as their integrity as writers was put into question. I have to hand it to Kermit, he really stood his ground this week as he basically told the branding guru what he thought of him and his behind-the-back maneuvers. He said something to the effect of, “I’m in charge of the writers and nobody actually knows what your job is.”
After the branding guru introduced them to special guest star RuPaul (who apparently uses the same tailor), the gang decided to write a segment on the show catering to his strengths as a fashionista. Dubbed “Garbage Bag Challenge,” two designers (fan favorites The Swedish Chef and Bobo the Bear) were each given six trash bags and 30 minutes to create a fashion ensemble to be judged on the runway by RuPaul. I won’t ruin who won the contest, but it successfully put the branding guru in his place. Kudos, Kermit. (And speaking of Kermit, he finally took another fearless plunge by leaving Denise a voicemail asking her if she’s had enough time to think about the status of their relationship. I expect we’ll have an answer about that next week.)
The other special guest star was Ingrid Michaelson singing a duet of her hit song “The Way I Am” with Miss Piggy. I guess we all have to appreciate Miss Piggy for who she is. After her self-discovery that Uncle Deadly is indeed the true friend she never knew she had, she did something completely out of character by taking the entire “Up Late” staff to see his production of Clueless. It seems his “leading lady” quit on him at the last minute and he was forced to step in as Cher. Seeing him in the iconic Alicia Silverstone get-up uttering such bodacious lines as, “I was totally bummed!” was priceless. Thank you, writers, for giving me more great moments like that this season.
