The 70th Annual Tony Awards honor Broadway’s best

On a national day of sorrow, The 70th Annual Tony Awards went on as planned with host James Corden making a brief pre-show appearance to dedicate the ceremony to the victims of the horrific tragedy in Orlando earlier Sunday morning. Rather than dwell on the tragedy, the ceremony reminded us how much joy singing, dancing and performance can bring to our lives. It was a refreshing three-plus hours with highlights from the nominated musicals and truly heartfelt acceptance speeches from the winners. Lin Manuel-Miranda, Frank Langella and Barbra Streisand addressed the Orlando shooting with much grace that didn’t turn the event maudlin, but the joyfulness of the musical numbers and exuberance of the winners wiped away those tears for a few hours. The Tony Awards once again excels at being the best awards show on television.

Many of the awards this year were won by first timers, either for their first role or after a long career. Of course the big news this year was the record 16 nominations for the groundbreaking musical Hamilton, but it fell short by one to tie the record for most wins with 11 awards. The Producers holds the win record with 12 Tonys.

And the winners of the 70th Annual Tony Awards are (in bold):
