The 2016 Tony Awards Nominations

Hamilton: An American Musical

Hamilton: An American Musical

The nominees for the 70th Annual Antoinette Perry Awards — the Tonys — have been announced, and the diverse field of nominees includes one that has shattered all previous records.

That show, and it should come as no surprise, is Hamilton which earned a record 16 nominations, besting the 15 noms earned by The Producers and Billy Elliott. The show’s creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda, earned four nominations himself in the categories Best Musical, Best Actor in a Musical, Best Book and Best Score.

The show with the second most nominations is George C. Wolfe’s retelling of black theatre history, Shuffle Along, Or the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed. The musical received 10 nominations. In the play category, Eclipsed scored six nomination. The play was written by Danai Gurira who is best known for her role as Michonne on TV’s The Walking Dead.

Some other high profile shows didn’t fare as well with musicals Tuck Everlasting, Disaster! and One Your Feet scoring one nomination. George Takei’s semi-autobiographical Allegiance failed to earn a single nomination.

The ceremony will be broadcast live on CBS, Sunday, June 12 and will be hosted by James Corden. Below is a complete list of nominees.
