The Whispers promo is better than Moon Talk’s entire tune

ABC

Very early this morning (in the 4:00 a.m. hour, way too early to be up) I caught a promo for ABC’s upcoming drama The Whispers based on Ray Bradbury’s short “Zero Hour” from his anthology The Illustrated Man.

I saw spots for the show previously and have been mildly interested, specifically because of the Bradbury connection, but this was the first time I’d seen this particular commercial.

I’ll state without reservation it hit me like a ton of bricks. And for the pure and simple reason of the music: It was enticing, haunting and powerful. It sucked me right in and made me want to watch the pilot even more.

A product of the 80s, the song is engrained into my New Wave psyche. Overcome by this newly heard version, I sought out more. With a little digging I discovered the very familiar “Our Lips Are Sealed” (originally written by Jane Wiedlin and Terry Hall of The Go-Go’s and The Specials / Fun Boy Three, respectively) was covered by the musical group Moon Talk. I found the full version of the tune and dove in.

Conclusion? It only took a full listen to the song to fall for me. I learned quickly I only like the quiet moments of the song which work exceedingly well for the spot. The rest of the song in its full form? A big fat *meh*

I’ve been drawn in by music before, on a bevy of occasions. It’s nothing new. But I was somewhat surprised by how deflated the song left me when it seemed so full of intrigue in its chopped up segments. I still enjoy it in its abbreviated, alluring form for The Whispers. However, as a whole it’s one of those covers I really don’t care to revisit.

  2. Michael – I found it. It’s by Hidden Citizens and it’s titled ‘Silent Running’

  3. I have seen commercials for The Whispers. The one I saw had a cover of Mike and the Mechanics ‘Silent Running’ playing in the background. However I cannot find it anywhere. Could you point me in the right direction? Thanks
