This was one of those weeks when bad decisions by various teams totally screwed up their game while working to other teams’ advantage. For this leg of The Amazing Race, the remaining teams were surprised to see Sheri & Cole board the plane to Bali. This is the second time the pair have been saved by a non-elimination leg, and everyone being on the same flight put everyone on a level playing field. And while Kurt & Brodie finished the leg in first place, would the use of the Express Pass come back to haunt them?
In Bali the teams had to go to Tanah Lot Temple for their first clue, and there they had to take numbers in the order of arrival. The first two teams were Kurt & Brodie and Sheri & Cole, and they would be the first two teams to begin the next task the following morning at 6:15 AM. The next two teams, Burnie & Ashley and Tyler & Korey, would start at 6:30 and the last two, Zach & Rachel and Dana & Matt, at 6:45.
The teams had to take a traditional Balinese offering to a temple in one location and then take another offering to a second temple. Unfortunately, Kurt & Brodie didn’t read their clue very well to understand that the first delivery was only a few yards away from where they started, wasting a whole lot of time and reducing their first place lead in the process (with Sheri & Cole following them). Everyone else seemed to be doing well, until they found out the second offering was a large snake which they had to carry to the second temple. I don’t know, I may have had to take a penalty at that point but everyone was able to conquer their fears and get through the task to get their next clue … at the Bat Temple!
The clue contained a Road Block which required one team member to first carry two containers of sea water to a spot on the beach to wet the marked off area of sand to being a salt-making process. They they had to scoop salt out of a piece of bamboo with a coconut shell, and then pack and tie off four plastic bags with dry salt ready for market. And if they weren’t filled properly, they had to go back and make it right.
And this is where the bad decisions started coming for some teams. First to arrive were Kurt & Brodie, and not knowing what the task consisted of, Brodie wasn’t feeling confident that he could do whatever it was. Unfortunately for the pair, Kurt has been doing pretty much all of the Road Blocks, except for the one in Dubai in which Brodie gave up and used the Express Pass. This Road Block was the last one Kurt could do as one team member cannot do all the Road Blocks. From this point on, Brodie has to do the rest of them, and they no longer have an Express Pass (which had to be used by this leg). Only Burnie & Ashley know the pair used their pass on the last leg.
It was a physically grueling task, which made Zach & Rachel’s decision to send Rachel in blind very concerning for the other teams. They began the task in fourth place, but the walk to and from the ocean with two containers of water across her shoulders was only going to slow them down even more. Rachel was the only female team member to tackle this Road Block, but she managed to get though it without too much complaining.
In the meantime, Sheri & Cole had to complete their Speed Bump before attempting the Road Block. They had to prepare ten bowls of soup and sell them to anyone in the area, and then they had to eat a bowl themselves. Between the mystery meat and the spicy hot sauce, they managed to get their bowl eaten and headed off to the Road Block, actually arriving before Matt & Dana who followed in last place.
At the packing portion of the challenge, Kurt was not getting his bags filled properly and had to keep re-doing them, even dropping one in the process which gave Burnie a jump on them to leave the Road Block in first place. Tyler & Korey followed in second to the next location, Pantai Mertasari, and the Detour. Except it wasn’t a Detour, it was a second Road Block and whoever didn’t complete the first one had to take on this one. Which means that when Kurt & Brodie arrive, they’ll be expecting a Detour and Brodie will have to complete the task himself. Without an Express Pass to help get them back into first place.
Kurt & Brodie arrived to the beach in third place where the team member had to construct a large kite — without anything but a display kite for instructions. It actually looked harder than it was and when the team members figured out that all of the pieces were numbers to go into the corresponding slots, it became much easier to assemble. But there were still some pieces that gave them problems, and Brodie in particular was in such a hurry to complete the task that he was tying the cords wrong that held the tail of the kite in place. With the race so close to the end, Kurt & Brodie could be in real jeopardy if Brodie’s Road Block performances are any indication. It’s clear Kurt has carried this team to all of their wins thus far.
Watching the giant kites launch was an amazing sight, but there was still a race to attend to and Tyler & Korey found themselves back in first place. With the kite in the air, they received the clue leading them to the next Pit Stop, a Phinisi (a traditional Indonesian sailing boat) anchored off shore of Semawang Beach, meaning they would have to get into an outrigger canoe and paddle their way to the finish. Burnie & Ashley were very close behind, but Tyler & Korey had enough of a lead once they were on the sea to make it to the ship and claim a first place win. Burnie & Ashely were in their eternal second place. Sheri & Cole came from behind to take third place, with Dana & Matt in fourth.
Back at the Road Block, Brodie and Zach finished one right after the other and it became a taxi race to the canoes and a paddle race to the Phinisi. Through some clever editing, it looked like Kurt & Brodie were paddling in the wrong direction while Zach & Rachel were passing them, but in the end the guys who have been either first or second the entire race were suddenly in fifth place (which equates to last place in the next leg), and Zach & Rachel were eliminated. It was a rough day for the last two teams, when some bad decisions almost ended the race for one, and sent the other team to walk the plank.
