With production delays behind them after JJ Abrams jumped ship and Roberto Orci took and then relinquished the directorial reins, the third installment of the rebooted Star Trek movie franchise has begun filming in Vancouver this week. And Paramount is looking ahead to keeping the franchise going into the future.

As part of the negotiations for Star Trek 3, the core cast members got sizable raises including Chris Pine who made only $600,000 for the first movie and got only a minimal raise for the second. Pine was set to earn $3 million for the third movie, but that has been doubled in exchange for him agreeing to sign on for a fourth film. Zachary Quinto has agreed to a similar deal, so Kirk and Spock will remain aboard the Enterprise for at least one more film.

In other Trek news, Paramount is still very interested in bringing a new series to television and have invited Michael Gummelt to pitch an idea for a new show. What makes this newsworthy is that Gummelt is not an industry professional, but rather a superfan who has been working for the past twenty years on creating a series titled Star Trek Uncharted. Gummelt’s idea brings the Trek universe 200 years into the future after the adventures of Kirk and Spock when a signal from the Andromeda Galaxy is received from a species claiming to be the creators of all life in the Milky Way. A new USS Enterprise is constructed to explore the new galaxy and make first contact. Gummelt has a pilot script and four episodes already written, and even if Paramount goes forward with the concept, it’s unlikely they would stick to those scripts. It remains to be seen what becomes of this project.

Star Trek 3 is scheduled for release on July 8, 2016.
