Does anyone remember the Maya Rudolph variety special that aired way back in 2014? The show got mixed reviews — and this viewer was hoping for a lot more laughs than it delivered — but NBC and Lorne Michaels have been constantly at the drawing board looking for a way to make it work.

It seems that they may have finally found that one little piece of magic that was missing — Martin Short. NBC has been considering the show as a companion to Neil Patrick Harris’ new variety series Best Time Ever (based on the British Saturday Night Takeaway), and during the network’s 40th anniversary salute to Saturday Night Live, the Maya and Martin segment was actually a sort of “pilot” for the re-worked variety show. Short has not signed yet, but is expected to soon, giving Rudolph’s show a new title, Maya & Marty. Take a look at the clip above to see their comedy gold.

NBC has not commented publicly.
