Dancing with the Stars was full of show-stopping Broadway numbers

It was Broadway Night on Dancing with the Stars, which meant plenty of hijinks and panache. Idina Menzel was on-hand as a special guest judge for the evening, which included two rounds of competition. The first round was full of show-stopping Broadway-inspired numbers, while the second round consisted of a Team-Up Challenge. Other fun surprises were special guests Leona Lewis and DWTS‘ own fan favorite Mark Ballas!

Let’s take a look at how everyone did on this brilliant ninth week of competition:

Marilu Henner with Derek Hough, Samba

Marilu and Derek opened the night of competition with a Samba to “(Oh) What a Night” from Jersey Boys – and Mark Ballas (who’s taking time off to be in the Broadway production of Jersey Boys) returned to the ballroom to cheer them on while performing on the stage. Idina and Julianne felt the dance was joyful, while Bruno said it was as bright and sizzling as a warm summer’s day. Carrie Ann felt the love between the partners and called it fun to watch. But was it too late for Marilu to experience another breakthrough in the competition?

Calvin Johnson Jr. with Lindsay Arnold, Waltz

Leona Lewis was on-hand to sing “Memory” from Cats as Calvin and Lindsay elegantly Waltzed around the ballroom. I think the most entertaining part of their package was seeing them in matching costumes from Cats. The Waltz itself was everything. I loved the backdrop and listening to Lewis’ enchanting voice. Julianne loved that Calvin owned the dance and respected his ongoing commitment to the competition. Bruno said Lewis sparkled and Calvin was as majestic as a Siberian tiger handling a pussycat with balanced stride in and out of tempo. Carrie Ann admired how the two danced as one, though she thought they were a little ahead of the music this week. Idina admired his gracefulness and athleticism.

James Hinchcliffe with Jenna Johnson, Jazz

The Wiz is a fantastically colorful production and who better to fill such tall shoes than James and fill-in partner Jenna? Those costumes were amazing – I loved how they brought the magical land of Oz to life. I only regret Sharna was still too injured to participate. Bruno called James a wonderful wizard and an even better dancer. Carrie Ann was envious of his ability to rock such a striking green outfit, while Idina echoed that sentiment. Julianne told him he should be on Broadway, which is really the highest compliment one could hope to receive in this competition.

Terra Jole with Sasha Farber, Charleston

Sweet Charity is not a Broadway show I am familiar with. However, Terra and Sasha came out and sold their Charleston for all it was worth. I thought it was fun and highly entertaining. Carrie Ann thought it showcased all of Terra’s strengths, while Idina said she was supremely talented with a winning spirit. Julianne admitted the limitations are real but said the spotlight was way too small for Terra. Bruno enjoyed how she gave such a large performance.
Score: 38

Jana Kramer with Gleb Savchenko, Waltz

I’m also not familiar with Waitress, but I enjoyed Jana and Gleb’s scenic Waltz in a diner. They have such wonderful chemistry together. Idina said Jana broke her, while Julianne called it beautiful storytelling from the heart. Bruno said she deserved huge tips, while Carrie Ann said she has a special gift and thanked her for sharing a slice of her life in such a mesmerizing way every week.
Score: 40

Laurie Hernandez with Valentin Chmerkovskiy, Argentine Tango

The “Cell Block Tango” from Chicago was the perfect show-stopping finale for Laurie and Val. Julianne told Laurie she looked absolutely stunning, while Bruno called her a dazzling delinquent guilty of killing the Tango with precise accuracy. Carrie Ann was left speechless, saying Laurie worked Val like a balance beam. Idina told her she’s sexy and to never question that.
Score: 40

The Team-Up Challenge was an interesting addition, pairing up celebs to earn additional points in the competition. However, it didn’t feel like it was necessary with Semi-Finals just around the corner.

Team Last Men Standing – James and Jenna & Calvin and Lindsay, Paso Doble

The final two male contestants teamed up for a wily Paso Doble that featured Calvin as a sheriff and James as a bandit pitted against each other in the Wild, Wild West. It was bromance at its finest, as these two were pretty evenly matched in terms of skill and charisma. Bruno said it was mayhem and carnage and thoroughly enjoyed it. Carrie Ann loved how well they danced in sync, while Idina called the dancing amazing. Julianne liked how they duked it out and both came out with guns blazing.
Score: 37

Team Cubs – Terra and Sasha with Marilu and Derek, Jazz

Jazz is a difficult dance style to master and a surprising choice for the Team-Up Challenge. However, I felt Marilu and Terra nailed it with their enthusiasm. And what an appropriate team name, as these are clearly the underdogs remaining in the competition. Carrie Ann commended them for the side-by-side synchronization, while Idina called it exuberant and accurate. Julianne enjoyed the hustle elements and the fun energy. Bruno likened it to a kooky, booze-filled New Year’s Eve party in The Great Gatsby mansion.
Score: 36

Team Sisters – Laurie and Val & Jana and Gleb, Contemporary

Dancing a sisterly Contemporary piece to Ciara, Laurie and Jana looked pitch perfect. That dance had some really cool moves that almost gave me chills. Idina was left speechless, saying it was magical to see them dance together. Julianne loved that they took a raw, emotional approach and how they learned from each other’s style. Bruno said they were two little birds who reached new heights and admired how they used everything to maximum effect. Carrie Ann enjoyed the teamwork, saying they merged into one greater dancer.
Score: 40

The eliminations get harder and harder as the competition progresses. The couples in jeopardy were revealed to be Marilu and Derek and Jana and Gleb. Ultimately, it was Marilu and Derek who left the ballroom just shy of Semi-Finals. I wasn’t shocked by the results, but I was saddened. Who do you think will make the final cut next week?
