Pitbull reprised his role as special celebrity guest judge on Dancing with the Stars‘ Latin Night after opening the show with his hit single “Greenlight” (with special guests Flo Rida and LunchMoney Lewis) and the skimpiest auto racing-inspired costumes I’ve ever seen. Do you think this theme made James Hinchcliffe feel more at home in the ballroom this week?
Let’s take a look at how everyone did on this spicy sixth week of competition:
Ryan Lochte with Cheryl Burke, Salsa
Though the fast pace and fancy footwork of Latin Night may have been intimidating to Ryan during rehearsals, it didn’t stop him and Cheryl from dancing a fun and fancy-free Salsa. He looked looser this week (maybe it’s because they finally got him to take off his shirt – and pants – on the dance floor or maybe it was the glow-in-the-dark shorts and body paint) and like he was actually having a good time. Pitbull’s favorite thing was the neon colors up top, while Julianne’s only complaint was the lack of seeing him perform in a Speedo. Bruno called it a vibrant, almost radioactive Salsa, though he did note Ryan lost some stamina throughout the dance. Carrie Ann noticed his musicality was a little off tonight. However, all four judges commended him for his commitment to the hip action and necessary facial expressions to really sell the dance.
Terra Jole with Sasha Farber, Paso Doble
Terra and Sasha danced a sparkly Paso Doble to a unique Latino rendition of “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood.” Julianne told her it may not have been her best dance, but she appreciated that Terra gave it all her fire. Bruno admitted it was a difficult song to dance so much Latin content to, noting her moves weren’t as sharp as they could’ve been. Carrie Ann felt the anger and intensity were a bit one-dimensional but told her to come back stronger in the next dance. Pitbull felt the intensity but thought maybe she over-thought it a bit too much. It was not her strongest performance, but I’m still rooting for this team anyway.
Amber Rose with Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Cha Cha
I don’t know who would be the more difficult partner to work with – Amber Rose or Maks. They both have such fiery personalities and demand so much perfection. I loved her costume and the story element of their Cha Cha. She finally looked comfortable in her own skin – you could tell she was enjoying herself this week. Bruno said she teased him to death with that cliffhanger of a Cha Cha. However, he told her she needs to continue to push the footwork a bit more. Carrie Ann told her she’s stunning and she lights up the room, but she needs to break through that glass ceiling. Pitbull admired her outfit and commended her for delivering such a fine performance, while Julianne wants her to express more emotion by not being afraid to smack Maks around and use her natural sass to her advantage.
James Hinchcliffe with Sharna Burgess, Rumba
James having trouble selling the sexy on Latin Night? Oh, please! James and Sharna’s Rumba to James Bay’s “Need the Sun to Break” was plenty sultry, and they didn’t need the cheesy Ricardo storyline from rehearsals to sell it. He never ceases to amaze me in this competition. Carrie Ann told him he’s the main enchilada because he brings all the right nuances to his dance movements. Pitbull called it sexy, powerful lust. Julianne appreciates his subtleties, calling him the best male dancer they’ve ever had on the show. However, she still wants to see more chemistry between them. Bruno disagreed with her completely on that point, saying they deserve a Nobel prize for chemistry. He admired their fluidity, saying it was pitch perfect from start to finish. Indeed.
Marilu Henner with Derek Hough, Cha Cha
After such a breakthrough performance last week, Marilu and Derek were back in full force with their Cha Cha. Marilu is still such a knockout – that hot pink dress was absolute perfection on her. Pitbull said it was very sexy and he was very impressed. Julianne complimented her on the stunning legs and musicality, while Bruno applauded her for managing to be both sexy and sophisticated in this number. Carrie Ann said she owned the dance with her confidence and radiance. However, she cautioned her on elongating her legs a little better. It was good to see Marilu still on an upper trajectory with the judges’ scores for a second week in a row.
Jana Kramer with Gleb Savchenko, Argentine Tango
Dancing an Argentine Tango to Selena Gomez’ “Hands to Myself,” Jana and Gleb upped the ante on sexiness, taking their amazing chemistry to new levels of lust in the limelight. There was a bed and a steamy shower scene. If these two don’t end up dating, that’s a missed opportunity. Julianne proclaimed, “Now, that is chemistry!” She enjoyed seeing Jana’s continued improvements, while Bruno was driven wild with insatiable desire after watching that sensational routine. Carrie Ann noted sexy is the easy route for this couple but admired how much they really pushed the envelope. Pitbull channeled his best Bruno imitation, taking off his jacket and proclaiming, “It’s getting hot in herre!” After such a scorching dance and a perfect score from the judges, it’d be a shame to see this couple go home so early in this competition.
Maureen McCormick with Artem Chigvintsev, Samba
Maureen cracks me up – only she could liken a plastic pink flamingo in someone’s yard to sexiness. She may have struggled during rehearsals with Artem this week, but it wasn’t immediately evident in her final performance. She dazzled like a radiant showbird and appeared as confident as ever on the dance floor. Bruno said it was a classic Samba with all the trimmings but told her she needs to not be afraid to “just let go.” Carrie Ann applauded her enthusiasm and contagious spirit, saying she continues to have breakthroughs on the program. Pitbull felt there was a little bit of over-thinking going on but felt she did a good job overall anyway. Julianne loves her attitude and how she came out and captured what the essence of Latin Night is all about.
Calvin Johnson Jr. with Lindsay Arnold, Argentine Tango
Dancing a scorching Argentine Tango to The Eagles’ “Hotel California,” Calvin and Lindsay were once more at their peak in this competition. Carrie Ann commended them for the most astounding lifts she’s ever seen in 23 seasons, saying Calvin was large and in-charge. Pitbull said he should’ve used more of those moves on the football field. Julianne told him his focus was incredible and he owned the dance floor tonight, while Bruno commented that he was smoldery and a real leading man. Julianne cautioned him to work on his toes. Naturally, MegaTron was the one to completely destroy the Mirror Ball pinata with one powerful swoop!
Laurie Hernandez with Valentin Chmerkovskiy, Salsa
While you may think Laurie has everything handed to her on a silver platter in this competition, her package revealed her struggles and how her age was a so-called disadvantage on Latin Night. I saw nothing wrong with their Salsa – the lasers showcased her sharp precision in a hip way. The judges seemed to concur, with Pitbull noting it was an amazing performance with plenty of hip shaking. Julianne thinks everything Laurie does is phenomenal, but she wants to see her become an exceptional ballroom and Latin dancer. Bruno called her “a little chickadee Salsa devil,” commenting that she killed it this week. Carrie Ann said she’s the most powerful performer in the competition, although she did note some tiny mistakes in the routine.
I enjoyed watching the couples take swings at the Mirror Ball pinata this week – that was a nice touch and it looked like so much fun! I also enjoyed Keo’s Rumba to The Doors’ classic “Light My Fire” during one of the returns from a commercial break. Throughout the program, it was revealed that Calvin and Lindsay, Amber and Maks and Jana and Gleb were in jeopardy. To the surprise of no one, Jana and Gleb were then revealed to be safe. Ultimately, it was Amber and Maks who left the ballroom. Maks is ready for “diaper duty” with his fiancée Peta and the impending arrival of their baby. Who do you think will be going home next week? I’m predicting Calvin and Lindsay, though I hate to see him go!
