American Horror Story: Roanoke :: Blood and a big bombshell

So let’s recap real quick since last week’s American Horror Story left us so stunned we forgot to do a post about it! So crazy Agnes showed up, killed Sidney and his crew, feeling momentary guilt for killing a young mother, and alternating between herself and her Butcher character. Shelby was hoping to reconnect with Matt, but then she caught him in the basement with the witch and went all Negan on his head with a crowbar. Monet, Audrey and Lee tried to seek help but got captured by the Polks, who proceeded to carve up Lee to serve to her fellow captors. And then Agnes came face-to-face with The Butcher herself … and got her own skull split down the middle.

This week was another fraught-filled episode that was like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre meets The Hills Have Eyes with Mama Polk training her son Cain (an unrecognizable Finn Wittrock) in the fine art of carving the thinnest of slices. But Cain and Lee develop a connection of sorts, an icky one that didn’t have the happy ending Cain was expecting.

But when Lee thought she was a goner, she asked aspiring moviemaker Cain to let her record a message for her daughter, delivering one of the biggest bombshells yet — Lee admitted the killing her ex so he couldn’t take their daughter away. But Lee got away, and managed to save Audrey while Monet had already escaped. Poor Audrey did lose a tooth to Mama, who wanted the teeth to protect her sons. While Lee and Audrey made their way back to the house, Monet is running for her life from the Polk brothers.

At the house, Shelby and Dominic attempted to escape through the tunnel as the Roanoke ghosts descended on the house, hoping that perhaps the ghost of Edward Mott would help them. But Edward wasn’t there, instead the pair were attacked by the ghosts of the Japanese family and then, back in the house, by the nurse sisters and Piggy Man. Poor Shelby had the chandelier fall on her ankle (the same one Mama Polk had smashed originally) but the two made their way upstairs, barricading themselves in the bathroom. Knowing there was no way out, and feeling massive guilt for killing Matt, Shelby took the only way out by slitting her throat.

Making their way back into the house through the tunnel, Audrey and Lee found Matt’s body and then found Dominic and Shelby. Dominic told them how Shelby killed Matt but neither of them believed him. Lee insisted Shelby loved Matt too much, and Audrey said she cared too much about herself having played her for six months, knowing Shelby better than she knew herself. Dominic’s punishment … being locked outside the bedroom where Piggy Man took care of him.

But as the sun rose and the horrors subsided, Audrey (who left a morbidly hilarious farewell message to her fans, apologizing for not living long enough to bring them the roles she wanted to portray) and Lee attempted to make their way out of the house — to return to the Polk farm because Lee insisted the video footage of Audrey smashing Mama Polk’s head with a hammer would be used against her, but we know she really wanted the tape with her confession to murder — only to encounter the Piggy Man again outside the front door. But it wasn’t the actual Piggy Man, it was the actor who played Ambrose in “My Roanoke Nightmare”. Welcome back, Wes Bentley!

With only two episodes to go and the full Blood Moon about to rise, the preview shows us more people discovering the horrors of the Roanoke house while Lee and Audrey are fighting to convince the actor that they’re not acting any longer. Who will be the sole survivor? And one other thought: if what we’re seeing is supposed to be footage found from the production that never aired, from cameras around the house and carried by the cast, other than the video footage shot by Cain Polk and his brother, where are the wide shots inside the barn coming from? Did Sidney somehow get that placed wired up as well? Tis a bit of a puzzlement.
